Book Review: A Heart Surrendered by Joy K. Massenburge

AHSReviewBanner (2)Hello, readers!

I finished reading a book today, and I’ve got to tell you about it! This book is not my usual read. I like historical fiction. Tell me of those bygone days in American history where a handsome fella and sassy gal have to overcome a dangerous situation, and I’m hooked

Can any of you relate? 🙂

So, imagine my surprise when I found myself biting my nails from chapter to chapter, reading the Contemporary(!) African American Christian Romance A Heart Surrendered.

I said biting my nails. No. This is not a suspense novel, but the emotional arc in this book had me stretched so tight I couldn’t put it down until I knew how the heroine would overcome.

Sharonda is not your typical romance-heroine. She is a beautifully flawed, overweight, self-conscious, intelligent, 32-year-old living at home with her parents. Sharonda also directs the youth department at New Hope Church (which her father pastors). All the while she suffers from a medical condition that could make motherhood impossible. Through her journey you see her struggle to overcome the need to be what others expect or desire for her and except she is loveable the way she is.

Carl Ray is a phenomenal counterpart to Sharonda. He seems nearly flawless, physically and spiritually (if that is even a thing 😉 ), because he’s talented, desirable, successful and has learned his day to day walk with God gives him worth. So, how is he a good counterpart you ask? Carl Ray, the poor man, gets to wait on God while the love of his life battles her own self-doubt and he is faithful.

I recommend reading A Heart Surrendered by Joy K. Massenburge.

About the book:

IZ-G6TpA (1)As the teenaged pastor’s daughter of New Hope Church, Sharonda Peterson knew finding comfort in Carl’s arms was a mistake. But how could the only night she ever felt beautiful be wrong?

When Carl leaves town to pursue an acting and singing career, Sharonda relegates herself to a life of church service–and solitude–rather than face the pain now associated with that one night.

Carl Ray Everhart has been caught up in the fast pace of fame … and female adoration. But a near-death experience has him questioning everything and vowing to set things straight … starting with the love that got away.

When Carl returns home to serve as the worship leader at New Hope, Sharonda finds that it takes every ounce of her resolve to resist his pursuits … not to mention memories that threaten to overturn the delicate balance she’s created. Can she finally surrender the one thing she’s tried all these years to protect: her heart?

About the author:

62014727_900262076990550_7219444071540981760_nMassenburge crafts the love stories of pastors and their kids. She was born the sixth child of a pastor. Thinking she had avoided the church scene, she married a football player. She joined him at Sam Houston State University where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. Then on signing day with the Green Bay Packers, Mr. Football advised her she would be a pastors wife instead…and they raised pastor’s kids; a son, a daughter, and a goddaughter.

She resides in Tyler, Texas, where you can find her surrounded by three grandchildren, curled up on her back porch with a book, or filling her five-acre country home with fifty plus people for a Blue Bell (ice cream) party.
